What is the McGregor Carbon Digging Spade like?

This has a thin carbon steel blade with wide treads and a lightweight fibreglass shaft. The plastic handle has a grip insert and the shaft has an ergonomic, forward-tilting design.

What is the McGregor Carbon Digging Spade like to use?

This carbon steel spade feels very light thanks to its fibreglass shaft but it’s almost too light – the blade feels thin and flimsy and the whole thing lacks force. However, for those who find weightier spades troublesome this could be just the answer.
The shaft has an unnecessary rubber rim at the point where it joins the socket and this together with the very proud rivets snag on the hands every time you turn the soil. The length and shape of the shaft are good but the grip is the handle twists round, rubbing on your hands.

Will the McGregor Carbon Digging Spade last?

The carbon steel blade is thin and the aluminium shaft does feel like it may snap if the spade comes into contact with very stony ground – and it will be impossible to replace

Is the McGregor Carbon Digging Spade good value for money?

At £15 this is a reasonable budget spade, particularly for a carbon blade but the aluminium shaft feels like it won’t last and there are uncomfortable features that could start to make digging tiresome.

Who is the McGregor Carbon Digging Spade most useful for?

Best for gardeners who have trouble with heavier, weightier spades and want to dig over and cultivate once a year ready for planting.
